13th Stop: Kuan Im Tng Temple and Masjid Khalid

"I promise to take care of you for the rest of my life" the boys said.

"How can you be sure?" the girls asked.

The boys looked around and found the perfect way to answer the girls. They grabbed the girls by their hands and brought them before a Chinese temple. There, they made a promise to look after them till the end.

[The sophisicated designs of Kuan Im Tng Temple ]

The temple was constructed in 1921. Its architecture contains sophisticated designs of Dragons and the eight immortals famous in chinese mythology and beliefs. This temple also serves as one of the only Buddhist temple in Katong and Joo Chiat Area.

We happened to visit Kuan Im Tng Temple during the Chinese New Year and it was packed with people. We also managed to witness some lion dance performance. The first impression we got was the sophisticated design of the temple, with Dragons and the 8 immortals famous in Chinese Legends. The green roof tiles are Chinese-made and its roof ridges are adorned with statues of dancing dragons with the celestial pearl, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. By the crowd gathered at the temple, One can clearly tell the temple garnered a wide public support and truly lives up to its namesake as one of the most well-known landmarks in Joo Chiat area.

Then, they brought them to a mosque where they once again made the same promise.

"What was that about??" the girls asked curiously.

"To make a promise that covers all bases,” the boys replied with a smile.

" -__- " the girls thought.

[ Yea! Making a promise that covers all bases :P ]

This mosque was built in 1971, and renovated in 1998. the mosque was originally intended as a place of worship for Indian Muslims, and is today one of the gathering points of Katong/Joo Chiat’s Malay community.

As we are reaching the mosque, we observed the distinct Malay influence from the shops, the attire of the residents and the food found here. Situated among shophouses, we realize the influence it had brought upon its surrounding, that aid it in becoming a historical landmark of Joo Chiat.
