12th Stop: Koon Seng Road Shophouses

After leaving the clinic, they walked on along a stretch of road flanked by rows of beautifully designed shophouses. The wonderful arrangement of flowers coupled with the overall atmosphere of the setting made it the perfect time for the boys to finally accomplish what they sought out to do.

The shophouses are distinctive as they contain strong Peranakan influcences in their architectur and design. The road was formerly known as Lorong East Coast Road, this road was renamed in 1934 after Cheong Koon Seng, an auctioneer and estate agent. He was the elder son of Cheong Ah Bee, a wealthy first generation Straits-born merchant from Malacca. The shophouses act as the finest example of Peranakan architecture in Singapore and are exceptionally ornate.

They each plucked a flower and approached the girls. This was it. They had only one shot.

They went down on their knees and popped the question which many before them never had the courage to ask.

"Will you be willing to spend the rest of life with me?"

And the girls answered....

"Maybe"
