11th Stop: Joo Chiat Community Club and Former Joo Chiat Maternal and Child Health Clinic

After the girls were done with their shopping, they proceeded on and passed by a community club. "I want to find out if there are any dance classes!" one of the girls exclaimed. Thus, they headed into the community club hand in hand to look out for available dance lessons.

It was once a humble wooden hut with simple facilities like a library, boys’ club and basketball court, this club has been extensively renovated. It also used to serve as a reporting place of National Service call-ups during the 1970s. Today, it acts as a meeting place for the community of Katong and Joo Chiat.

It must have been either the weather or the fact that there were too many courses to choose from because one of the girls started to feel nauseous. They decided to head over to a nearby clinic to seek help for her.

[Maternal and Child Health Clinic no longer exist, but is now taken over by SCANTEAK ]

The Maternal and Child Health Clinic was established in 1907 to counter the high infant mortality rate at the time. After World War II, it began to focus on treating a nation devastated by the Japanese Occupation.
